Our Rare Breed Meat

In addition to being a special place for education, nature and off grid sustainable farming, Longwater Farm is proud to now be offering rare breed pork.

Our animals are free range and grass fed, living outdoors with lots of space to run around and exercise, with the best quality food and care possible. We are rearing Berkshire, Gloucester Old Spot, and Oxford Sandy and Black pigs primarily.

The relationship between farm, animal and customer is very important to us, and wee want you to know that your animal has had the best quality of life with us and we want you to see the high standards of animal welfare that we set ourselves. We regularly post to our Instagram page for our followers to see what we get up to day by day, and we offer all our customers (once an order has been placed) the unique opportunity to visit the farm and animals, and to meet with the farm manager, free of charge, to help facilitate that vital relationship and understanding we have with our food and farmers.

We only produce pork from British rare breed pigs. We do this because this is the most effective way to stop these beautiful breeds of farm animals from going extinct as a result of industrial farming. We don't over produce though, we farm just enough to sustain our family and homestead, so when you buy from us you know you're getting something special.

Message from the Farm Manager

Longwater Farm is home to a variety of British rare breed pigs. After several years of running the education and veg box side of the farm, Shona, the Farm Manager has come back to  her original passion; working with piggies!

"I am so excited to be working with rare breeds again, I think it is so important to farm these beautiful animals so that they don't go extinct. Humans created these breeds years ago, and then created the problem which now threatens their existence through post-war industrial farming. I believe it's our responsibility to find a solution which doesn't result in them dying out forever. Keeping them in the local food market is arguably the most ethical way to do this; it reduces travel miles for the animal and customer, it means small scale highly aware farmers can provide the respect and highest quality of life that the pigs deserve, and it enables us to really think about our food and build those important relationships."

NUMBER OF PORTIONS AND SIZES

Just remember how much meat is involved in a pig. One whole pig will easily feed 70-90 people, if you were having a hog roast, for example. So make sure you have plenty of freezer space if you are storing your meat, and please don't hesitate to give us a call to discuss size and weight Vs portion numbers if you are unsure.
